Environmental and sustainable design are not new concepts to Ambrosino, DePinto & Schmieder.  was originally formed in response to the growing need for energy efficiency in building design. The firm specialized in analyzing the mechanical and electrical systems in existing and new buildings to determine ways to reduce energy consumption and cost. The work included analysis and the retrofit design of high performance central chilled water plants, free cooling systems, heat recovery, cogeneration, building automation systems, as well as some very innovative alternate energy projects.

As more and more clients asked the firm to implement its energy conservation recommendations, the firm slowly expanded into a full service mechanical and electrical design engineering firm.
has continued to be a leader in energy efficient design and has incorporated many of its environmental design strategies in its new building design. However, sustainable design is more than energy efficiency, it is a building design which is energy efficient and ecologically friendly while providing an enhanced indoor environment. Sustainable design covers a broad range of issues including the use of recycled materials, passive heating and cooling, indoor air quality, humidity control, high efficiency filtration, water conservation, lighting and natural daylighting control strategies. has incorporated many of these concepts in the course of designing building systems for the past twenty years.

Since the inception of the firm, all three partners have been actively involved in advancing energy efficient design. Dominick DePinto and Ken Schmieder were on the advisory panel to help develop New York State's first energy conservation construction code and its later revisions. Michael Ambrosino served as a Peer Reviewer in the 1999 High Performance Building Guidelines Project for the City of New York Department of Design and Construction. The firm is an active member of the U.S. Green Building Council and most recently, we are proud to announce that Joseph Tagliaferro, P.E. and Juan Carlos Toro are
LEED™ Accredited Professionals.
